The website is down! Did someone take the Xbox?

Sounds like a funny statement but it actually happened. A university IT department apparently put Linux on an Xbox and installed it in their server room. It was then used for their students to work on their web projects. When the helpdesk started getting calls that the site was down a hunt for the missing Xbox began. You can read the entire story here.

The easy way to audit.

So I have said for years as everyone in the security industry has “security is as good as your weakest link”. A couple of auditors for a credit union have performed a very real example. They laid USB drives where employees would find them that had trojans on them. These trojans then emailed persaonal info back out to the auditors. The easy way to audit eh? That is also another example of why anything on your systems not needed to perform business functions should be turned off. I don’t just mean inbound listeners and services but outbound as well. If a user doesn’t HAVE to have email to to their job don’t install it. It would help lessen the impact of situations like this. Remember the biggest key in being secure is to imagine that anything and everything can be exploited. The only truly safe computer is one that’s unplugged, and even then only if the hardrive doesn’t get stolen.

Need to break your crackberry addiction?

It is a very valid concern that people truly can’t live without their always on email connection. It wasn’t till recently that I couldn’t be away from my business email for more than a short time. That kind of constant need to be in communication with the whole world is what has one Chicago area Sheraton hotel manager wanting to help detox blackberry users. Apparently he personally quit cold turkey and offers a similiar experience to his guests. It’s not a bad idea to take a working vacation from your little always on friend. If you are reading this and have a Blackberry, turn it off for 30 minutes. C’mon, I’m just trying to help.

Crazy people in cages

Motorcycles are dangerous enough without having to worry that some crazy person is going to run you down. That is exactly what happened in North Carolina where a car dragged a motorcycle he ran over for 4 miles. That’s right he hit a bike and then kept driving with the bike and rider under the front of the car. Luckily the biker kept presence of mind to get out of the situaion but the fact it happened is disgusting. On top of it the biker is also a soldier who returned from Iraq last year and just purchased the bike. Apparently the driver was sick of all the motorcycles in the area for bike week and lost it.

The evolution of dance

This is probably the funniest 6 minutes you have seen in a while. This comedian actually goes through the evolution of dance and music in his skit. Very funny and well done.

You must be…

A cowboy was herding his cows in a remote pasture when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced out of a dust cloud towards him. The driver, a young man in a Brioni suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban sunglasses and YSL tie, leans out the window and asks the cowboy,

“If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, will you give me a calf?”

The cowboy looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers,

“Sure, Why not?”

A nicely done gas price map.

With gas prices going up as they have been it is very interesting to see a map of the whole US at one time. This is a very nicely done map, written in .net, that can show you pricing very easily through the country. You can zoom in and right click and see the current actual price by county.
