2005 SysAdmin Day

Ok everyone, don’t forget that July 29th is SysAdmin Day. Time to remember that special geek in your life. You know the one who keeps your computer purring along at light speed. The master of bits & bytes. The hero that saves you from viruses and spy-ware. So when the 29th comes around shake his or her hand and play them this song and say thanks because you know the other 364 days you only call when something is broken. 🙂

Worldwide Motorcycle Ride to Work Day is Wednesday, July 20, 2005

The worldwide event involves hundreds of thousands of individual commuting riders and scores of organized rider groups. Participation in the yearly demonstration is estimated to triple the number of riders on the road.

According to the Ride to Work nonprofit advocacy organization, “Ride to Work Day reveals that motorcyclists come from all walks of life, work in all occupations, and range in age from teenagers to grandparents.” The American Motorcyclist Association and many other worldwide rider organizations actively encourage all motorcyclists to ride their cycles to work as a grassroots demonstration on the third Wednesday in July each year.

No more registering

So tell me, are you tired of giving personal information just to log into a site to read an article? Seems kind of crazy to me and most times I miss some good reading and information because I don’t want to give personal information out. I also just don’t want to spend the time registering at a place I may never visit again. Well I have a great solution for you. I found a site called BugMeNot that solves this problem. They have members that register dummy accounts for you. Then when you want to get in to let’s say, read an article, you enter the URL on their site. They then give you the account you can use to get in. It’s not hacking it’s just keeping your personal information private.

Need a Visio Stencil?

If so I have the place for you. The Visio Cafe is one of the best resources for computer related Visio stencils. The site is free and has a search tool to make it easy to find just the right image for your network design. The site also seems to be updated fairly regularly which is always nice. Check it out and happy designing.

Transmeta is closing it’s doors.

A very sad announcement I just heard is that the low power low heat processor idea from Linux creator Linus Torvalds is no more. Transmeta has announced it’s closing it’s doors. I remember being very excited about the ideas these guys had but alas it is not to be. You can read an article about the decision and details of what is to happen next here.

Xbox 360 to be backward compatible

Microsoft revealed that the Xbox 360 “will be backward-compatible with top-selling Xbox games.” This non-specific explanation seems to indicate that the changing processors between Xbox 360 is going to make it too difficult to ensure complete compatibility – however, it’s unclear what percentage of Xbox titles will run on Xbox 360.

This is great news for all of us Xbox lovers. If you haven’t seen the graphics yet let me tell you they are amazing. Should be a blast.

You can check out the footage of the official Xbox 360 press conference here.
